Trip to Yokohama+Tokyo

We went to Yokohama+Tokyo on 4/5 Jan to go to US embassy to register Hannah's birth. We drove up there instead of taking the Shinkansen. We left home 3 am and got to Yokohama at 8:30. It was pretty busy traffic because it was the final day of the winter vacation and everyone was on their way home. Even though we encountered traffic jams along the way (EVEN AT THAT HOUR!!) we made it in five and a half hours. On the way there we drove past Shizuoka and saw Mt. Fuji. The mountain was very beautiful and we were lucky to have a clear view of it in the moring light!

In the car, Hannah slept pretty good!
When she woke up, she looked outside, ate some food "manma" (she calls both food and Yuka by the same word....MANMA!!...sometimes its hard to tell which she is after!) and went back to sleep.
What a happy passenger!

When we arrived in Yokohama we went straight to the IKEA store. Sam managed to stay awake for 30 minutes before retreating to the car to sleep. Yuka spent the next 3 hours perusing the goods at IKEA and came away with a very nice new toy storage box for Hannah. Afterwards we met Sam's friends, the Suzuki family, and his former student Noriko.

Of course we ate a lot! Too much in fact!! We ate chinese foiod for lunch and the went to China town for dinner!! Unfortunately little Hannah was asleep while we were eating....so she couldn't help us to finish the food.

The next day we went into Tokyo to the US embassy. We had never EVER (well Hannah had never been on a train PERIOD) been in such a crowded train. Just when you felt you were pressed enough there would be a surge inward and 2-3 more people would jam themselves into the carriage. The people working at the station pushed everyone inside so the doors could close and we were on our way. We held Hannah up high so she was not crushed by the throng of people heading off to work.

Our trip to the embassy was quick and we were out of there by 10ish. After that it was onto Sam's favorite ramen shop for a quick bite to eat before heading home. Hannah managed to sleep through this food adventure as well. Oh well, I'm sure there will be other times for her to eat ramen! We managed to avoid both the Yokohama/Tokyo and the Nagoya rush hour. the return trip was only 3 hrs and 45 minutes. All told our highway fees and gas were about 16000 yen. Far cheaper than the 40,000+ it would have cost is to take the Shinkansen!
